morning. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew in for brent. garvin thomas will be joining us from san bruno throughout the morning. >> right now we want to fill you in on the latest details about the san bruno explosion. as of this moment, one person is confirmed dead. and more than 20 people are injured. the explosion and fire destroyed 53 homes, damaged at least another 120. >> safety crews will get together in about an hour. they will survey the damage and decide when it's time to start to search for survivors, for more dead. we have at least one confirmed death, search and rescue operations could begin any time. >> if this is the first time you're hearing about what happened, here's the details. the initial explosion actually happened just after 6:00 last night near glenn view park in san bruno. witnesses say flames shot 200 feet to 300 feet in the air. winds fueled those flames. they jumped from house to house to house in the neighborhood. >> we have new information coming from the fire chief in the area that is now six people have died in this fire. so it has gone from one c

morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez. federal investigators and the people who survived the san bruno blast will return to the nabd this morning looking for the same thing. answers to how could this happen. we have live team coverage today in the bay's bob redell has a story of the people who live there and lost so much but we begin with christy smith with the latest. >> reporter: good morning to you. you know, ntsb investigators are beginning their work but they have already met with pg&e for sometime and they asked for an extensive history of this pipeline. things like excavation work around it that may have perhaps damaged it. but they say it will take time to get to the bottom of why this pipeline exploded and the fire that followed it leveled a neighborhood. here's what we know t. 30-inch gas pipeline was installed in 1956. investigators will send part to a lab in washington, d.c. for analysis. the toll is staggering, four dead, 52 people injured, seven people hospitalized with critical burns and there are still three homes left to search. if it's cool enough dogs w

joining here. and he's going to talk to us about the difficulty of investigating a case lake this. thank you very much, trent. >> you're very welcome. this is definitely a very complex investigation, because what you're doling with is hercules pd dealing with the initial homicide, which has taken place. there's been multiple people who have come up missing, who were located deceased from a california highway patrol perspective. we were involved in a police chase, which ended in the suspect being shot. >> reporter: now, you told me just a few minutes ago that the suspect's girlfriend you found -- not you, but your agency found in the car, and it looked like she was not only strangled, but perhaps beaten as well. >> yeah, she did suffer fatal injuries and appeared as though she had some severe facial damage to go along with some severe injuries around her neck. so right now we're not 100% certain as to how she was killed, but strangling was probably a strong possibility. >> so you have all been here at the scene since last night. is this typical of an investigation like this? >> yeah, abso

. >> thanks, rob. a warning for women in the east bay. a sexual predator is on the prowl using a familiar mode of attack. kristi smith is live in walnut creek with more on what to electric out for. christie? >> reporter: anything out of the ordinary, people wandering around or seem like they don't belong. this is the fourth sexual assault at the same apartment complex here in walnut creek. in one of the earlier incidents, the man walked up to the door and was able to barge his way in after the woman answered. this time investigators are not sure how the attacker got in. it happened again at the park regency apartment yesterday evening. a woman in her 20s was home alone and sheriffs investigators are calling it a home invasion and a sexual assault. they say this one doesn't appear that anything was taken from the apartment. at the same time a berkeley man is still in jail and it linked him to a july sixth rape. he is charged with two attempted rapes here. he has pleaded not guilty and the family said he wasn't even in the area at the time. live in walnut creek, christie smith, today in the bay.

where that escalade is. kris sanchez joins us live from richmond this morning, where police gunned the suspect down. kris, how are officers really trying to untangle this web of crime? >> you know, it's difficult. they're trying to make sure they stay in constant communication with all of the different agencies, five of them in all, that are investigating this case. you mentioned that white escalade. that is still missing and is at large. but we do know that the vehicle that the suspect was in last night was crashed right into the front of this 99 ranch market here in richmond. inside that vehicle, another gruesome finding. chp officers found the body of a young asian woman. they checked for a pulse, there was no pulse, and at that point, it looked like she was beyond help. they say it looks like she was badly beaten and strangled. likely, that is the cause of death. chp officers are not releasing her name right now, but they do say that they believe she was the girlfriend of the suspect, efren valdemoro. now officers say that he crashed his car here after leading chp officers on t

weekend for you. those of us who live here, with he know that sunshine, even at the beaches, we will have 70s there. as we look out over the south end of the bay, nice start to the day over san jose. the temperatures have been in the 60s for most locations. a couple of 50s in the north end of the bay. mid-50s if that. these numbers are going to quickly rebound and jump up. we have a big ridge of high pressure settling over the bay area, most of the western half of the u.s., from washington down through san diego. there will be a little bit of cooling along. tomorrow's storm, the tail end of it, passes the bay area. all it is going to do is keep us right about where we are today. sunday, very similar to saturday. maybe we will drop into the 60s at the beaches. we will continue with more of the 90s in some of the warmer spots. monday, those 90s you see there will be closer to 100 degrees in some of the warmer spots. concord over to say livermore, you have got a good chance of reaching 100 degrees. we will get those at palm springs and in through the central san joaquin valley. look at san l
